MAXIMIZING FIBER INSTALLATION LENGTHS

SureGrip Gloves are part of a system of specialty fiber optic lubrication products available from American Polywater. This system can result in significantly longer cable pulls. This system also includes Polywater® F Communications Cable Pulling Lubricant and the LP-D5 automatic pump. The maximum length of any pull is dependent on the type of cable, the conduit type and configuration, the lubricant, and the lubrication techniques. We recommend using the Pull-Planner™ 2000 Cable Tension Calculation Software Program coupled with actual in-field tension data for optimal installation planning.

The use of SureGrip Gloves and the following basic lubrication and pulling techniques are recommended.

  1. Check the conduit system. It should be clean and continuous with no collapsed or displaced sections.

  2. Lubricate the winch rope as it is pulled into the conduit. Unlubricated winch rope start-up tension can often exceed lubricated cable tensions. Lubrication of the winch line eliminates the "burning through" of the rope into the subduct.

  3. Lubricate the entire conduit system. Spread a metered amount of lubricant ahead of the cable throughout the entire run.

  4. Clean and lubricate the cable as it is pulled into the conduit.

  5. Pull quickly (preferably 75 ft/minute or more) and avoid stopping. Greater tensions are required to start a cable from rest than are required to keep it in motion (static frictional force is greater than the kinetic).
